The classic white t-shirt can never go out of style. We all have that one white tee we throw on with our favorite jeans or joggers. When we have no clue what to wear, we turn to the crisp, bright, and soft white t-shirt. It is a staple in any person’s wardrobe, even for Tony.
Today on National White T-Shirt Day, we are paying an ode to this iconic shirt. We’ve seen this on Brando, McQueen, Presley, all the way to Eminem, Jay-Z, and Diddy. Although it is a unique statement piece to wear, this piece of cotton has historic meaning that not many of us know about.
White t-shirts represent the workforce. February 11th honors the many men and women who work in the automobile industry. During the 1930s, the Flint sit-down strike inspired tons of government officials to enforce protections for workers from powerful companies. One massively dominant company at that time was General Motors. The 30s were a time during the Great Depression where unions fought for their insurance, health, payroll, and safety regulations.
This White Shirt Day was inspired by the idea that many of these revolters had. The idea that those shirts should be kept as clean as their bosses. February 11th brings back moments from history that led to the protections of automobile workers and the united union force that we still see today.
Wear a crisp, bright, and clean t-shirt today. We suggest you make a pot of sauce and pour espresso martinis without staining your shirt. Good luck.
