IN CARMELA WE TRUST

BY JULIA DI MARCELLO

On this Mother’s Day, the Tony team would love to pay their respects to a fan favorite - Carmela Soprano. Carmela Soprano, played by Edie Falco, is the iconic mob wife and mother of two we adore. Carmela does not get in the way of Tony’s dealings. In fact, she eventually makes money on her own investments and real-estates while still remaining fashionably up to par with her clothing choices.

Let’s take a moment to admire Carmela Soprano’s loud, feisty, aggressive, petty, nurturing, yet kind personality through the episodes of The Sopranos.

“Getting my wine in position to throw in your damn face”.

Carmela grabbed her glass filled with red wine when she immediately thought Tony was about to confess he had been cheating on her. She says, “Getting my wine in position to throw in your damn face”. Carmela was extremely relieved when in actuality, Tony admitted to seeing a therapist instead. The red wine glass was lowered and Tony and Carmela’s dinner that evening continued peacefully.

“We have got guns here.”

During the Season 4 finale, Carmela answers a lovely phone call at the Soprano home. She discovers it was an angry drunk by the name of Irina. Irina, one of Tony’s numerous mistresses, calls to inform Carmela of Tony’s infidelities. Carmela shouts to Irina on the phone threatening her to never call again. If Irina calls again, Carmela will find her and shoot her. Carmela says, “We have got guns here”.

“It’s the Boston Strangler… Jesus, Ma.”

Carmela’s mother, who we know by the name of Mary, is paranoid very often. Much of this reason is because her son-in-law is a mob boss and her daughter is the wife of this mob affiliated man. Throughout an episode in season 3, Carmela almost had it with her mother’s paranoia. During the family’s usual Sunday dinner, the doorbell rings. Mary freaks out wondering who could it be. Carmela jokes and says, “It’s the Boston Strangler… Jesus, Ma”. If you don’t know, the Boston Strangler murdered 13 women.
