If tough scary men from Soprano’s mob have been in therapy at one point or another, so can you.
During an episode in Season 1, Tony Soprano decides to be upfront and personal with his boys. He admits to seeing a psychiatrist for 5 months now. Tony even discussed previous times when he was passing out, which happened due to his anxiety attacks.
This episode is fairly interesting. Christopher, Silvio, and Paulie are quite silent when Tony admits to being in therapy for some time. To break the silence, Tony continues to assure his men that “business was not discussed, no names were mentioned”.
In response to Tony's admittance to seeing a therapist, Paulie says, “It’s not the worst thing I've ever heard. I was seeing a therapist myself about a year ago.”
The good friend that he is even admits, “I had some issues. Enough said.” The iconic man ends his statement with a Paulie type of ending, “I like some coping skills.”
We all should love some coping skills like Paulie. In this instance, we see macho mafia men like Paulie and Tony who do have deep seeded problems. They needed help at one point or another. It has always been agreed in society that without a clear mental state, you can not perform well at the workplace. Tony can’t successfully be the mob leader that he is, if he is not mentally stable.
It’s not the worst thing in the world. Therapy is not the worst thing people can hear if you ever admit to it.
Tony would want you to see a ‘shrink’. And I’m sure Paulie would want you to get some coping skills too.
